2024-2025 Equity & Inclusion Colleges of Distinction badge

By the Colleges of Distinction Editorial Team

Every student deserves to feel supported, valued, and empowered to succeed—regardless of their background. At Colleges of Distinction, we recognize that true excellence in higher education depends on intentional, campus-wide efforts to support diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI).

That’s why we’re proud to highlight schools that go beyond enrollment statistics to create inclusive communities where every student can thrive. The colleges and universities on this list are committed to creating equitable experiences—from the admissions process to graduation day and beyond.

What Does Equity & Inclusion Mean in Higher Education?

Inclusion isn’t just a buzzword—it’s a commitment. Historically, U.S. colleges and universities have served a privileged majority, often leaving students of color, first-generation students, LGBTQ+ students, disabled students, and those from low-income backgrounds on the margins.

Equity in higher education means actively identifying and removing barriers that prevent underrepresented students from succeeding. These institutions are building environments where all students have access to the resources, mentorship, and support they need to thrive—not just survive.

Why These Colleges Stand Out

Each of the 2025-26 Equity & Inclusion Colleges of Distinction has demonstrated a clear and ongoing commitment to:

  • Recruiting and supporting underrepresented students and faculty

  • Offering accessible, inclusive academic programs and student services

  • Fostering community through DEI offices, cultural centers, and campus events

  • Creating learning environments that amplify diverse voices

  • Prioritizing equity in leadership, hiring, and decision-making processes

These institutions aren’t just talking about change—they’re making it happen.

How We Evaluate Equity & Inclusion

We evaluate schools for this recognition using a rigorous and holistic methodology. Institutions must already be recognized as a College of Distinction and then demonstrate exceptional commitment to DEI across campus. This includes practices in:

  • Admissions and financial aid accessibility

  • Retention and graduation outcomes for underrepresented students

  • Inclusive curricula and faculty development

  • Campus climate and student-led initiatives
