3 Reasons I Feel Fully Supported by My College

Hannah Scott / Anderson University »

As a junior or senior in high school starting the college search, you don’t think about the details beyond your major, your dorm, and your meal plan. However,  it’s equally important to feel fully supported by whichever college or university you decide to attend. There are three reasons why I feel fully supported by my university, Anderson University.

My professors do more than give lectures

Whenever I am asked about one of my favorite things about Anderson University, I always say my professors. My professors have consistently gone above and beyond simply teaching me but supporting me in other ways as well.

As I was searching for an internship, my professors offered guidance and even celebrated with me when I secured one. I have constantly felt encouraged and supported by professors.

When I walk into their office confused and unsure of what I want to do and the steps I need to be making as a senior, they sit me down and talk me through things I should do to best prepare myself for life after college.

Most importantly, the reason I truly feel supported by my professors is they have shown me time after time they care about me as a person beyond the classroom. Professors have stopped me in the hallways to ask genuinely how I am doing. They check in with me and ask if I am doing okay if they know I am having a particularly hard week.

Having professors who push me, encourage me, and care about me inspires me to do my best in classes and helps me feel supported by Anderson University overall.

Anderson cares about students’ well beings and sees them as more than students

While the most important thing at college is to learn and to prepare yourself for a future career, it’s also a time to learn to take care of yourself. During my time at AU, I have felt very supported on my journey of self-discovery. College can be extremely stressful as you are learning to juggle classes, a job, a social life, and extracurriculars. You are learning so much about your future career and life, which can be incredibly overwhelming. AU understands this, which is why they offer counseling services to all students without any extra fee and without a sessions cap. If you need it, you can go every week for all four years at Anderson University.

This is one of the major reasons I feel fully supported by my college. I know they care about my well-being as a person and try to help me stay healthy. Finding a school that strives to support you outside of academics is extremely important because you never know what life may throw at you during college. Having the freedom to go talk to a counselor when life gets a little crazy for me is so helpful. More importantly, Anderson University has helped foster an open environment that encourages the importance of taking care of your mental health.

AU provides unique opportunities outside of the classroom

Anderson University works hard to provide students with opportunities to further learn outside of the classroom and become more prepared for the real world. One of the opportunities I have experienced is networking with professionals. Having a university that helps you begin the networking process is crucial to finding a job. When I began my search, I already had a strong network of people to reach out to.

As a political science major, my professors work hard to provide us unique opportunities to meet with government officials.

Anderson has hosted former senators, attorney generals, and Indiana Supreme Court Justices. Whenever the department hosts a visitor, a group of students is selected to sit in and get one-on-one time with them to ask questions ranging from professional development to their career experience.

Getting to sit in on these visits have helped me build my network and provided expert advice on how to navigate my future career path. AU and my department have allowed me to meet and network with professionals I would not have been able to meet on my own.

These are just a few reasons as to why I feel fully supported by Anderson University. I have seen time and time again that the faculty at AU care about me and my well-being. They work hard to provide experiences outside of the classroom for professional development. Even if AU is not the fit for you, it’s important to consider these things as you are searching for a college to fit your needs.
