COLLABORATIVE ASSIGNMENTS AND PROJECTS
Collaborative Assignments are utilized in every academic division, but the College of business provides perhaps the best example of innovation in this area. McMurry University in Abilene, Texas

McMurry University

Abilene, TX ‧ Christian ‧ 4-year

McMurry University is guided by core values of faith, personal relationships, excellence, and service, all of which support students to become well-rounded, global leaders. McMurry offers robust research opportunities, a number of international study destinations, and a committed service-learning program.

GLOBAL LEARNING
Each McMurry student develops a global mindset during their time in college. Through courses, faculty-led international trips, or traditional, independent study abroad, every McMurry graduate learns to be effective in a multicultural environment. Through faculty-led trips, McMurry instructors take students to international sites as a complement to their coursework. Past trips have included international business courses in Paris that allowed students to sightsee and speak with foreign professionals in a real-world environment.

THINK CRITICALLY AND COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY
Similar to other institutions across the country, McMurry requires students take courses in critical thinking and verbal and written communication. McMurry’s curriculum is unique, however, in the way it integrates these skills through experiences across disciplines, coursework, and majors.

In developing communication skills, students start off with six hours of general education courses that focus on composition, literature, and oral communication. But a career in business calls for very different communication skills than those in a career in education! That’s why, beyond these introductory courses, McMurry hosts major-specific classes that reinforce and contextualize these skills in each field of study.

The University of Texas at Dallas

Richardson, TX ‧ Public ‧ 4-year

The University of Texas at Dallas is a collaborative institution with a strong emphasis on research. The University offers a wide range of programs, affording students several opportunities to find their niche. UT Dallas is quickly progressing and turning out students that are well equipped to succeed.

INTERNSHIPS
UT Dallas recognizes co-ops and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) as existing under the umbrella, “Internship.” In all cases, students apply what they have learned in the classroom to real world experience. In order to be eligible, students must be enrolled at UT Dallas and have a declared major. Students must also have completed at least one semester in school and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Comet Careers, an online student portal, is a great resource for finding and securing positions. But before a student can become an intern, they must first attend an internship information session, report their position to Comet Careers, and make an appointment with a career consultant.

EXTERNSHIPS
Externships involve job shadowing. When students job shadow, they get a firsthand look at what a career has to offer, as well as the demands of the job. Externships allow participants to gain industry knowledge without a long term commitment. Some of the activities one might experience during an externship include: tours of the facilities, staff meetings, and observation of customer/client interactions. Externships happen over spring break. Interested students should contact a career consultant as early as possible.
