Long Island University
Brooklyn, New York
Founded in 1926, Long Island University educates and empowers men and women from all walks of life through a rigorous liberal arts education. As one of the largest private universities, LIU’s multiple campuses throughout New York and around the world offer more than 500 undergraduate degrees, all of which come with a liberal arts foundation that prepares students for lifelong success. This wide-reaching scope of LIU—across both physical locations as well as academic disciplines—firmly proves the success of its mission: Access and Excellence.
The University’s original downtown location offers students a place to cultivate continual growth and broaden their intercultural and education experience. LIU Brooklyn offers many opportunities for students to learn both in the classroom and out in the world. Students at LIU Brooklyn strive to become their best selves thanks to the plethora of activities available at their fingertips, whether they be academic or extracurricular. This lively college environment is designed for growth, success, and true fulfillment.
The growth of the University, as well as the growing population outside of the city, prompted the purchase of a new campus on Marjorie Merriweather Post’s estate. Located on the Gold Coast of Long Island, LIU Post is a small campus with big resources. Here, students enjoy the intimacy of a small school while learning and thriving with the resources of a metropolitan university. LIU Post further enriches the University’s assets with its world-renowned Tilles Center for the Performing Arts.
The Brooklyn, Post, and Global campuses each serve the LIU’s overall goal to prepare students to lead meaningful, educated lives while serving their communities and the world at large.

College Highlights
“It is with great pride that we present the LIU Brooklyn Honors College. This program is designed to provide academically gifted students with unique learning opportunities, real-world experiences, and collaborative research. For those interested in a challenging curriculum that will build global perspectives and provoke new levels of critical thinking, we encourage you to explore the LIU Brooklyn Honors College, which will elevate you to new levels of personal and professional development.” – Dr. Kimberly R. Cline, President, Long Island University
At LIU, an education is more than assignments, exams, and projects. Students are encouraged to think about their education within the context of the greater world around them.
HONORS
Both LIU Post and LIU Brooklyn’s honors colleges allow students to elevate their learning with challenging coursework in an enriched liberal arts environment. Students in the honors college learn in small groups, allowing themselves to thrive as independent thinkers with a voice. Through the honors program, students have the ability not only to work alongside motivated peers and network with professionals, but they can also take on exciting, active learning experiences. For example, LIU Brooklyn students can enjoy a wilderness seminar co-sponsored by the National Collegiate Honors Council and the U.S. Park Service, while LIU Post students might sign up for the “Partners in the Parks Program” to explore the Grand Canyon and the Everglades. What’s more, honors students have exclusive access to globetrotting travel seminars, venturing off to such cultural centers as Venice, Madrid, Paris, London, and Dublin.
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
At LIU Post, students find a vibrant community of passionate and driven people. Many students choose to participate in one or more of the more than 70 student organizations. They can join the student government, jazz ensembles, the “Pioneer” campus newspaper, and other clubs.
LIU Brooklyn’s student organizations span all areas of interest as well, including multiculturalism, media production, and pre-professional pharmaceutical studies. As home to LIU’s school of pharmacy, it is only natural for a variety of interest groups to draw together aspiring healthcare practitioners.
Both the Brooklyn and Post campuses host a thriving Greek community, each with six sororities and five fraternities.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
LIU believes in the power of community service. The LIU Cares initiative connects 20,000 students, 3,500 faculty and staff, and 200,000 alumni to service opportunities through volunteerism and community engagement. In 2018, for example, students from both the Post and Brooklyn campuses traveled to Puerto Rico soon after it was hit by Hurricane Maria to clean homes, build beds, and serve at an orphanage.
STUDY ABROAD
Students can study abroad to take their classroom knowledge out into the world. Faculty-led Study Abroad at LIU offers students the opportunity to spend their summers or winters in different locations across the world. Courses are open both to current LIU students as well as to visiting students from other colleges and universities. LIU’s global reach makes it easy for anyone to explore the world as part of an international network of scholars.

These opportunities give students the chance to personalize their education in a way that immerses them in what interests them most about their area of study. Hands-on learning is one of the most effective—and exciting—ways in which a student can grasp a complex topic and answer tough questions. Research, in whatever way it’s conducted, will ultimately gear students up to be critical thinkers, strategic problem solvers, and truly skilled academics.
THE FIRST YEAR AT LIU POST
Every year, LIU Post draws first-year students together to read a common text. Each text is carefully chosen by a committee of faculty, administrators, and students for its relevance to contemporary issues and facets of the human experience. The Common Read is a fun and exciting introduction to the self-reflection, critical thinking, and methods of inquiry unique to a liberal arts education and LIU. Students engage with the text on multiple levels through activities and programs in the Post Foundation course. This first-year seminar integrates academic principles to lay the foundation for success with help from faculty and library staff guide to learn effective research skills.
