It’s a place where forward-thinking faculty and students work to better the world.
GET HANDS-ON HEALTH CARE EXPERIENCE
UMR is located right next door to Mayo Clinic, the top-ranked hospital in the United States, giving students a direct connection to cutting-edge medical practices and research. Mayo staff, in addition to UMR’s world-class faculty, open up a world of opportunities for students to take part in in-depth, hands-on research.
In Directed Study and Research courses, students can either take on an independent project or support faculty in their existing research. Directed research offers students a close relationship with their professors, which can lead to further employment opportunities or the development of a valuable professional network.
The University of Minnesota Rochester has just unveiled a groundbreaking partnership to re-envision healthcare education. NXT GEN MED, a unique and innovative partnership between the University and Google, will combine world-class technology, research and immersive learning approaches for students pursuing health care careers. NXT GEN MED will provide a fast-paced, high-tech learning environment that includes hands-on experiences and mentorship that provide relevant career experiences and support, proven in the field to foster academic success and career readiness. The partnership will operate as a cohort model, with its first academic term launching in Summer 2022. Students will take courses year-round for two full years following a schedule that engages them in applied experiences, followed by a final academic term in the cohort’s third summer. The accelerated timeline reduces student debt and helps fulfill a critical need in the U.S. economy.

GOT A QUESTION? JustASK
As a premier health sciences university, UMR gives students every advantage to help them be successful. JustASK is where current students go to ask questions, get suggestions, talk about strategies, and discover solutions. Faculty don’t wait in their offices; instead, they can be found hanging out in the many collaborative spaces around campus.
FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE
The first year at UMR prepares students for an academic career full of success and engaging experiences. Every student takes part in the first-year seminar, which introduces them to UMR’s resources as well as the strategies for success that faculty, staff, and upperclassmen have used themselves. What’s more, undergraduate research is a curriculum requirement. Students present their research at the annual Research and Educational Symposium.
COLLABORATIVE LEARNING STYLES
Every University of Minnesota Rochester student prepares for the team-based nature of modern health care. Starting in their first year, students learn to work in teams and take the lead on their own education. Teams build the foundation for everything at UMR—even faculty work in teams, providing a model for students to follow in their classes and their professional lives.
Courses are taught by teams of faculty working with teams of students, giving several layers of support from which students can draw in their classwork.
LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITIES
UMR students can choose to participate in one of the many Living-Learning Communities (LLC), which provide an opportunity for students with similar interests to live and learn together. Being a part of a Living Learning Community has a number benefits, including developing strong relationships and networking with peers and professionals. Students who choose to live in an LLC participate in programs, activities, and initiatives that cater to their academic, social, and personal needs. Each LLC provides opportunities for leadership, civic engagement, and opportunities for students to further develop their self-identities as future health care professionals.
INTERCONNECTED CAMPUS
Students on the UMR campus are at the heart of one of the world’s top medical centers as well as at the center of an internationally known research community.
UMR is a community with strong faculty/staff-student relationships, a robust residential community, and a longstanding relationship with Mayo Clinic and the rest of the downtown community (all of which are well connected thanks to the subway/skyway system). Though different from the traditional university campus, UMR has a vibrant student life with access to the local YMCA for fitness and recreation. Students are very active in over 30 student clubs and organizations that are dedicated to health sciences and social and civic engagement. UMR students are leaders who are making a difference on campus and in the community.
DOWNTOWN ROCHESTER
The University of Minnesota Rochester is located in the perfect location for up-and-coming medical professionals. Rochester is the headquarters of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic, offering several professional opportunities for students to explore the medical profession.

Just ninety minutes from the Twin Cities, students can explore the Mall of America; go to a baseball, hockey, basketball, or football game; or stay in Rochester to learn more about local history and art.
