UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Faculty at Utica University are hired with the expectation that all research conducted is in coordination with undergraduate students. That focus sets Utica apart and offers students ample opportunities to get hands-on experience and go beyond the subjects featured in the classroom. Students present at national conferences, utilize cutting-edge facilities, and get to know faculty members who are leaders in their fields. In the past, students have investigated how light pollution affects ecosystems, produced NPR reports, and even discovered a new species of bacteria.
“I absolutely couldn’t have imagined having the experiences that I’ve had here. I came here for hockey and I found the cybersecurity program along with it, and it was such an enjoyable experience for me. I never would have predicted that I would have found such an awesome path. And I found great professors—who are now great friends—along the way.” – Carmen Johnson ‘13, Cybersecurity

A TEAM THAT CARES
Starting in their freshman year, Utica University students are introduced to their CARE Team, which brings together an academic advisor, a student success coach, a career coach, and a financial aid counselor to provide a single point-of-contact for every area of concern. The CARE Teams ensure students are planning for their collegiate and career futures from the beginning of their time at Utica. By taking an active role in each student’s life, CARE Teams offer the personalized resources and relationships needed to excel at Utica and in the workforce.
“Everyone here believes in me. When a college professor tells you, one-on-one, that you can do it, it’s meaningful. They saw more in me than I saw in myself. They knew I could reach a higher level.” – Alfonzo Whitehurst, Education ‘17
SOPHOMORE YEAR EXPERIENCE
After completing their first year at Utica, students can continue building an active relationship with the University through the Sophomore Year Experience. By combining a reinforcement of the skills and resources introduced freshman year with continuing education and career planning, Utica ensures students are building on the successes—or correcting the mistakes—of their first year.
COMMUNICATE EFFECTIVELY
All students at Utica leave college with excellent writing and verbal communication skills with an understanding of several disciplines. Several major courses emphasize presentation skills and bring in industry professionals for grading and feedback, helping create the next generation of communicators across industries. Throughout upper-division coursework, students learn to write for their specific career path, which adds to the basic writing foundations they get early on. Utica University students are prepared for any communication challenge they will face in their next stage of life.

PIONEER PATHWAYS
Students starting their Utica journey can live in Pioneer Pathways, themed communities that introduce incoming freshmen to a cohort of faculty, staff, and fellow students. Pathways are grouped either by major or by interest, but every community focuses on career development and bringing students together with classmates and faculty who will be alongside them throughout their college careers.
THE CO-CURRICULAR TRANSCRIPT
An academic transcript tells a student which classes they’ve taken, what grades they’ve received, and how close they are to graduating. But an academic transcript hardly tells the whole story of a student’s time in college. Utica University offers a co-curricular transcript, which helps students track everything else—organizations they joined, volunteer hours they performed, internships they completed, research they conducted, works they performed—that doesn’t show up on the academic transcript. Utica encourages its students to go outside of the classroom and engage in the community.
Service opportunities are readily available through Utica’s Community Connections, where students can find local, regional, and national volunteer programs. Through service-learning, students can not only give back, but also apply concepts learned through coursework as they become better students, workers, and citizens. At Utica, a student’s academic transcript informs their co-curricular transcript.
“Part of what we do in the curriculum is emphasize the need to give back to the community. So it’s a great opportunity to, rather than just talk about it, experience it, and see how you can help people.” – David Dubbelde, director of the Construction Management program
