FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR
The first year of college brings new experiences and new opportunities. Students immediately feel welcome as part of the campus community, enjoying a supportive environment in which to explore their majors and begin the development of skills that will serve them throughout their studies, in the workplace, and in life. This transition is often facilitated in first-year seminars, which are or 2-credit courses that cover all kinds of topics or fields.

GENERAL EDUCATION
UIC’s general education is an essential part of the undergraduate experience whose courses serve as the foundation for the knowledge, skills, and competencies of a well-educated citizen. The general education supplements all students’ studies with the training to think independently and communicate effectively.

ACADEMIC CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE
The Academic Center for Excellence provides learning support services to enable all UIC students to accomplish their academic goals. Students can make appointments with success coaches to create an individualized approach to personal success, allowing themselves to understand their best study skills and learning strategies.

LIVING-LEARNING COMMUNITIES
UIC is proud to offer students unique ways to live and learn on campus. Living-learning communities comprise of committed students who share a common interest. Students can choose from 15 different communities with topics ranging from Pre-Health to Women in Science and Engineering. Each community has a peer mentor who works within the group to make sure students have the best experience possible. Students also enjoy the benefits of making deeper connections with peers, having built-in study buddies, and gaining easy access to experiential learning opportunities that are relevant to their field of study.

STUDENT CENTERS
The Student Centers on campus have everything a student needs to feel included and inspired on campus. These spaces are engaging hubs with campus dining options, lounge areas, meeting spaces, and fun activities.

STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
With over 300 organizations, UIC has so many opportunities for students to get involved. Student organizations are a great way to develop a sense of community, great leadership skills, and meaningful relationships with their peers. Organizations range from academic, political, to special interest.

CAREER SERVICES
The Career Services office is there to help students identify and plan for life after graduation. From writing a résumé to practicing for the interview, the staff at career services are ready to help. Students even have exhaustive access to the office for up to three years post graduation.

INTERNSHIPS
Internships include any supervised work experience related to a student’s career interests, including work that is paid or unpaid, credit or non-credit earning, and/or in corporate, non-profit, government, clinical, or research settings. Most importantly, internships allow them to apply what they have learned in the classroom and develop career skills.
