College Highlights
Adelphi University offers many specialized programs for students eager to challenge themselves.
GLOBAL LEARNING
Levermore Global Scholars (LGS) is a program of distinction designed to enrich both the social and international dimensions of a college education, placing an emphasis on civic engagement and leadership. Adelphi’s nongovernmental organization status allows students to attend special briefings at the United Nations; three-quarters of those students participate in special activities with the U.N. each year.
LGS students have studied globalization while traveling in China, immersed themselves in sustainability in Costa Rica, visited schools to better understand education’s role in Cuba, and explored issues of conflict transformation and the arts in Kosovo.
“Study abroad for me was one of the most eye-opening experiences. Every day was a new adventure.” – Sabrina Davis, junior, history major
HONORS COLLEGE
Students from around the world pursue studies in the prestigious and challenging Honors College. The highly personalized program promotes intellectual growth and social interaction, including original student research-driven projects and excursions in the New York metropolitan area. Students can also choose to live in a living-learning community with other Honors College students.
HIGH-IMPACT LEARNING
Internship opportunities are available for every type of student, no matter what they decide to study. Through the signature Jaggar Community Fellows Program, students are paired with nonprofits across Long Island and New York City for paid internships throughout 10 weeks during the summer.
Overseen by Adelphi’s Center for International Education, study abroad opportunities are offered in more than 90 approved destinations in 40 countries. For either one semester or a full academic year, students live and study in Europe, Asia, Latin America, Australia or New Zealand. They may also participate in a variety of short, faculty-led trips to Europe, Asia, and Central America as well as alternative spring break adventures in places such as Costa Rica and Guatemala.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Adelphi takes great pride in providing undergraduate students with a variety of opportunities to pursue original research. The annual Research Conference, which marked its 16th year in April 2019, will be renamed the Scholarly and Creative Work Conference in 2020. Adelphi celebrates faculty-mentored research by students in virtually every discipline, from the arts and sciences to psychology and education. Through its McDonell Fellowship program, Adelphi provides a select number of science majors with paid, full-time summer research opportunities in University labs. Honors College students are also eligible for sponsored summer research fellowships in any discipline. Adelphi’s Gordon F. Derner School of Psychology supports undergraduate student research through its yearlong Emerging Scholars Program.

OPPORTUNITIES TO GROW
Great teaching is a hallmark of Adelphi University. At Adelphi, students have the opportunity to work closely with knowledgeable, dedicated professors who care about their academic success and intellectual growth. Students get to know their professors through small classes, research opportunities, and independent projects. Adelphi students are encouraged to conduct research alongside renowned scientists and liberal arts scholars or to create with award-winning visual artists, musicians, dancers, actors and directors.
FIRST-YEAR SEMINAR
One of the most exciting and intellectually challenging aspects of the first-year experience at Adelphi is the First-Year Seminar (FYS). Each year, faculty members from across the University create seminar courses on topics they are passionate about. All seminars focus on the reading of theoretical material and the consideration of its underlying questions, implications, and significance. Along the way, seminar participants become teachers themselves, leading class discussions and giving presentations. This focus on reading, writing, and speaking well in public reflects Adelphi’s belief in the influence those skills hold over success in college and for effective citizenship and leadership. In addition, a first-year English composition course allows new students to focus on the writing skills that are essential to clear thinking.
MENTORING PROGRAMS
The Adelphi University Mentoring Program, created to help ensure academic success for students at any phase of their undergraduate careers, is open to all students and noted as crucial for the first year. Transfer students are also encouraged to apply. In 2019, for the second year in a row, Adelphi’s Mentoring Program was honored with an Eduventures Innovation Award—this time for the success of its Mentoring Program for first-year students.
The program offers special focus for members of these campus groups:
- Students of Color—These underserved students will have the opportunity to explore all diversity, social, and academic concerns with their mentors.
- LGBTQ+ Students—These students can join a support group to discuss LGBTQ+ matters in a civil place with Safe Zone-trained mentors.
- Veterans—These students will be paired with mentors who can help guide and nurture them to ensure their collegiate success through training, structured group activities, and ongoing conversations.
- First-Generation Students—These students, who are the first in their families to attend college, will be able to share any concerns within a one-to-one model with mentors and their peers. About 30 percent of Adelphi students are first-generation college students.

LEARNING EXTENDS BEYOND THE CLASSROOM
Experiential learning through internships, service programs, research, and creative work allows students to stand out to future employers and graduate programs. Adelphi’s Jaggar Community Fellows Program and Panthers with a Purpose program offer paid internships for students to work and train with regional nonprofits.
SERVICE-LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
Service-learning is an integral part of the Adelphi experience. Incoming students volunteer through the First-Year Community Action Program (FCAP) for local service projects. Students can also pursue service-learning via various faculty-led study abroad programs during spring and summer breaks, such as community outreach efforts in Costa Rica and Guatemala.
SPECIALTY HOUSING
Adelphi’s seven residence halls include special housing options:
- First-Year Living-Learning Communities—The Leadership Community and the Service-Learning Community are great ways to make friends, earn required credits, and be a part of student life from the very first day at Adelphi.
- Honors College Suites—These can accommodate about 30 Honors College students. The suites, each with a semi-private bath and common living area, are in Earle Hall, as are Honors College classrooms, study lounges, and computer rooms. In addition, Adelphi offers an Honors Residential Community for First-Year Students.
- The Arts District—These rooms, also in Earle Hall, are open to all Adelphi students, regardless of major, who have an appreciation of the performing and visual arts. There are opportunities to interact and collaborate with other student artists and faculty in art, dance, music, and theatre.
- Gender-Inclusive Housing—This refers to rooms where people of any sex or gender identity can live together. This option helps create an environment that acknowledges, respects, and appreciates the diversity of the student body. Students may especially benefit from Gender-Inclusive Housing if they identify as transgender or do not wish to be identified by any gender identity.
- Greek Life and Social Fellowship Residential Learning Community—This community, located in Residence Hall B, is designed for students in Greek organizations and social fellowships.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
With more than 80 clubs and organizations, students can find a niche and connect with others who share their interests. And, if students have ideas for clubs that don’t yet exist, they can start their own.

SENIOR CAPSTONE
Adelphi is relentlessly dedicated to fostering the success of its students in college and beyond. All Adelphi undergraduates complete a capstone course or project as part of their major. Depending on the major, these may include portfolios of creative projects, senior seminars, and significant research papers and projects. The goal is to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their learning in a comprehensive and meaningful way.
CAREER AND GRADUATE SCHOOL GUIDANCE
The University’s Center for Career and Professional Development offers students and alumni a robust array of programs designed to develop professional skills. Frequent résumé and interview workshops, a comprehensive on-campus recruitment program, and a yearly job and internship fair are just a few of the opportunities available to students. Adelphi’s career portal lists more than 1,000 internships at leading companies and organizations in both New York City and Long Island.
About 94 percent of graduates are employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation.
The Office of Pre-Professional Advising and Fellowships provides support and individual advising for current students and recent graduates who are seeking admission to professional school. Many Adelphi graduates have continued their education at such schools as Harvard Law School, Boston University, Georgetown University, and Cambridge University.
FIRST-YEAR COMMUNITY ACTION PROGRAM
Even before they begin to take classes, Adelphi students understand their connection to the community. The First-Year Community Action Program (FCAP) offers incoming first-year students experiential opportunities right from the start with a weeklong experience of volunteer work with local organizations. Community service is a hallmark of an Adelphi education.
