College Highlights
Friendly and bright, Centre students take initiative in their education, internships, study abroad excursions, and research projects.
TAKE CHARGE
Centre offers twenty-seven majors and thirty minors. In addition to traditional majors, Centre opens up the opportunity and encourages students to self-design majors that are right for them. Double majors are common, and Centre offers dual-degree engineering programs with four major universities.
CENTRE COMMITMENT
As part of the Centre Commitment, all Centre students are guaranteed an internship, study abroad, and graduation within four years, or Centre will provide up to a year of additional study, tuition-free. Centre is ranked among the nation’s top ten in study abroad percentage, with 85% enrollment across the campus. Semester-long study is offered at campuses in England (London or Reading), France, and Mexico, with exchange programs in Japan, Northern Ireland, and England. A variety of three-week study opportunities are available at other locations around the world, including Italy, Vietnam, Barbados, Spain, and Turkey.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Centre students work closely with professors on collaborative research, allowing them not only to form close working relationships with experts in their fields, but also to play an intrinsic part in the innovative projects that are happening on campus. Small classes, caring professors, and active classmates make Centre a wonderful place to learn. Students grow alongside their friends as they benefit from challenging academics and unique topics of study during the CentreTerm.
A PERSONALIZED EDUCATION
Not only are Centre’s teachers among America’s best educated, but they’re also among America’s most involved. Centre professors teach all classes, not teaching assistants who are not yet experts in their fields. They also hold classes in their homes or host academic opportunities in the residence halls, allowing them to get to know students both in and out of class. Centre’s average class size of eighteen allows students one-on-one time with their professors. These friendly, dedicated instructors give students their home phone numbers, stop by and chat in the dining commons, and show up at students’ recitals or soccer matches. Because professors know students personally, they help them stretch to achieve their very best.
CENTRETERM
The first year at Centre includes a small, non-lecture-format seminar during the three-week CentreTerm in January. This seminar gives students an opportunity to share and experience special interests with professors and classmates. Freshman seminars often include field trips, dinner discussions, and other interesting learning activities.
EXAMPLE OF EXCELLENCE
One example of Centre’s outstanding faculty is Professor Stephen Powell, the internationally known artist whose elaborately colored glass vessels are held in permanent collections throughout the world. Many of his students even go on to succeed in their own glass careers, having benefitted from his long hours of intense, small-group instruction that ensured their mastery of the technical aspects of hot glass. Powell also teaches the business aspect of art and gives his students hands-on opportunities to learn about kilns, ovens, and other equipment that are essential to ceramicists and glass artists. He has secured extensive donations that have made it possible for Centre students to build a thirty-foot anagama kiln that is hand-fired two or three times each year for instructional purposes. Powell has also secured donations for one of the nation’s finest, state-of-the-art hot glass studios in Centre’s Jones Visual Arts Center, which opened in 1998 thanks to the help of supervised student construction.
Diverse and engaging, Centre has a warm and active community that’s second to none. Students can hike with the Outdoors Club, tour with a choral group, or prepare for finals with the Biology Club.
A WELCOME ENVIRONMENT
Centre College is located in historic Danville, Kentucky, on a 115-acre campus with sixty buildings, thirteen of which are included in the National Register of Historic Places. The College features athletic, academic, and library facilities that enable amazing collegiate experiences. Nationally recognized for its high quality of life, Danville is progressive, safe, friendly, and perfectly placed as a gateway to the region and the world. It’s called the City of Firsts for its many historical milestones, including the first courthouse in Kentucky as well as the first post office west of the Alleghenies. In 2000, the city helped Centre host the year’s only vice presidential debate.
ACTIVE STUDENTS
Centre students, 98% of whom live on campus, are bright and friendly people who bring life to their campus community. Centre students are diverse both geographically as well as socioeconomically. They enjoy having fun but are equally serious about their education. Centre students regularly win the nation’s most prestigious fellowships and scholarships, including Rhodes, Rotary, Fulbright, Goldwater, and Truman. And, thanks to the College’s vast offerings of ways to be deeply involved in their educations, students can grow as confident leaders. They can also enjoy Centre’s twenty-one varsity teams, about one hundred campus organizations, and more than two thousand events each year.

A EXCELLENT TRACK RECORD
Centre graduates are motivated and successful, finding amazing success in their careers and advanced study. They have gone on to lead in postgraduate success, with 23 alumni recipients of Fulbright Fellowships in the last ten 10 years alone. Maybe that’s why they’re so loyal—Centre’s alumni giving ranks at 56.7% and within the top 10 in the country.
93% of Centre graduates are employed in their field or doing advanced study within six months of graduation. About half eventually earn advanced degrees; some recent graduate schools attended include Michigan, Harvard, Vanderbilt, and Duke, and the British universities Oxford and Cambridge. As one graduate put it, “In law school I have classmates from Yale, Harvard, and other big schools, and I’ve found I can meet or exceed them academically.”
