STUDENT ENGAGEMENT
The Kathryn F. Hubbard Center for Student Engagement
When it comes down to it, an education has to be about more than rote memorization and textbooks. In order for students to be truly successful, they need hands-on experience. The Hubbard Center recognizes this fact and works hard to provide those meaningful experiences to students. Through student engagement activities, students gain hands-on experience that enhances the liberal arts experience and allows it to extend beyond the classroom. The Center provides information and advice on topics like study abroad, Winter Term, service, and internships.
Student Leadership & Involvement
The Hubbard Center offers students the chance to gain leadership experience around campus. Students are employed as Coquillette Peer Consultants and work to identify others who are interested in studying abroad, finding an internship, or pursuing any other kind of engaging learning experience. Consultants are responsible for raising awareness for students who aren’t aware of the many opportunities available.
STUDENT RESEARCH
Undergraduate research is an incredible opportunity for students to explore the process of inquiry, methodology, and discovery. On top of the personal benefits, experience in research is considered an asset to both graduate schools and employers. At DePauw, research extends beyond the laboratory and into several disciplines, and every student that chooses to engage in research is assisted by a faculty mentor. Students may opt to pursue their own work or work on a team.
Student Conferences: Research is an awesome experience, and many students want to share their hard work. DePauw connects students to conferences at which they can learn about other undergraduate research as well as share their own. Below are the student conferences available:
- Annual Clement S. Stacy Memorial Undergraduate Research Conference
- National Conferences of Undergraduate Research
- Butler University Undergraduate Research Conference
- Undergraduate Honors Conference Sponsored by the Communication and Theatre Department
SEMESTER-LONG STUDY ABROAD
Semester-long study abroad is an incredible opportunity that allows students to enjoy greater independence, global citizenship and tolerance, and cross-cultural communication.
FIRST-YEAR SEMINARS (FYS)
First-Year Seminars are introductory, foundational, and exploratory. Designed to engage students in reading, writing, and critical thinking, FYS courses are not meant to be introduction to a specific major, but rather new ways of thinking. Many of the courses take an interdisciplinary approach to topics through which students learn one concept from multiple points of view.

HONORS PROGRAMS
Self-motivated students who love a good challenge are encouraged to explore the honors options at DePauw. Currently, the university has four Fellows programs, as well as an Honors Scholars program. In each of the tracks, students have the benefit of an intimate learning environment that fosters both personal and academic growth.
Honors Scholars Program: The Honors Scholars program is perfect for the curious mind. Students enrolled in the program take the liberal arts experience to the next level by drawing connections between different disciplines and ideas. Honors students work closely with faculty and peers as they tackle challenging seminars, discussion-based courses, and an honors thesis.
Environmental Fellows Program: Environmental fellows study how humans impact the environment as well as the ways in which the environment affects humankind. The program emphasizes hands-on experience, so fellows gain firsthand knowledge of the topics they study. Fellows are also given several opportunities to practice their leadership skills.
Management Fellows Program: The highly selective Management Fellows program is best suited for students with an interest in business, leadership, or entrepreneurship. The program’s curriculum is a mixture of liberal arts education and real-world business experience.
Media Fellows Program: Students interested in the theory and practical application of media are invited to apply for the Media Fellows Program. Participants are given amazing benefits like access to a media lab, a speaker series, internship opportunities, and close interaction with experienced faculty.
Science Research Fellows: Students in the SRF program go on to pursue majors like biology, chemistry, and psychology. SR fellows benefit from faculty-mentored research experiences as well as amazing internship opportunities.
FACULTY-LED EXTENDED STUDIES PROGRAMS
Faculty-led study abroad takes place during Winter Term and May Term. These extended programs allow experienced faculty to lead expeditions in foreign locations. Students benefit greatly from the experience and enjoy the mixture of exploration and lecture. Destination and class offerings vary by year, so interested students should check the Off-Campus section of the site in order to find more information.
MANAGEMENT ACCELERATOR PROGRAM
The Management Accelerator Program is considered an Extended Studies credit and is open to sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The program, which takes place during Winter Term, explores the foundations of business and what it takes to make an organization run smoothly. All students interested in participation must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
WINTER TERM IN SERVICE STUDENT LEADERS
Winter Term service initiatives are a great way for students to get involved over break. During a Winter Term service trip, students travel to a community in need and work to enact positive change. In the past, students have assisted with construction projects, medical clinics, public health education, and much more. On each service trip, student leaders help facilitate the work and educate how their service will affect the future.
SERVICIO EN LAS AMÈRICAS
Servicio en Las Amèricas is an immersion program focused on service and global citizenship. Participants begin the program by taking three weeks of Spanish at DePauw and then spend two weeks performing various acts of service in Latin America. All participants are asked to sign a contract, promising only to speak Spanish for the duration of the trip.
CAREER SERVICES
Career Services is available to assist students with questions regarding school, internships, and careers. The center hosts a series of useful workshops and fairs throughout the year to help students develop networking and interviewing skills. Currently, Career Services offers services in the following areas:
- Advising
- Connecting with Alumni
- Professional and Graduate School Advising
- National Scholarships and Awards
- Career Fairs, School Fairs, and Workshops
- Internships and Jobs
INTERNSHIPS AND WHY THEY’RE IMPORTANT
Internships demonstrate competency to an employer, giving those who participate an edge when it comes time to interview for a full-time position. Internships allow students to gain both hands-on experience and firsthand knowledge of a specific industry. DePauw recognizes the incredible benefits to internships and works hard to provide students with several opportunities to get involved.
Summer Internship: Most students opt to complete an internship over the summer months. Students looking to complete a summer internship should seek the advice and assistance of the Hubbard Center. Counselors can help with the search process and can show students how to get the most out of their experience.
Summer Internship Grant Program: The Summer Internship Grant Program, headed by the Hubbard Center, awards grants to students pursuing unpaid internships in non-profit, start up, and government.
Short-Term Internship: Short-term internships take place during January. They are full-time positions and last for a maximum of four weeks. Many students that choose this route decide to use the internship as an exploration period. Short-term internships offer a great view of what a career actually demands and what the work environment actually looks like.
International Internship: An international internship is much more than career-related, hands-on experience. Students have an amazing opportunity to explore another culture, while fulfilling internship duties. Interested students should seek the advice of the Hubbard Center and begin planning their trip 1 year in advance.
