College Highlights
Flagler College encourages students to make the most of their education. To ensure this happens, the College emphasizes undergraduate research, community integrated education, study abroad, and internships.
UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Priding itself in its liberal arts tradition, Flagler provides the platform to students to conduct research in any of their fields of interest. Flagler professors join research cohorts to help their students develop striking, innovative research projects that both enrich the college experience and contribute to the body of academic literature. Research at Flagler has been recognized both nationally and around the world, and with the help of Flagler’s Internal Funding Awards, students are able to travel to conferences and access materials without needing to worry about expenses.
Past student research has covered the sociological issues of female sportscasters in the athletics industry, biological processes among a community of phytoplankton in California, and the economic complexities of China’s rivalry with America as a global superpower. Students are guaranteed the opportunity to sink their teeth into any topic within any discipline.
Many Flagler professors create innovative “Community Integrated Education” projects for their students that bring the energies of the classroom out into the world. From the humanities to foreign languages to the natural sciences, Flagler students are able to better the community while also fulfilling their educational mission.
STUDY ABROAD
Flagler College instills in its students global leadership, and through a vast range of off-campus program options, students have opportunities to immerse themselves in the many cultures that lie far beyond the college’s walls. Studying abroad pushes students to have a deeper understanding of the world as they merge firsthand cultural experiences in with their academic work.
Students can study abroad independently, through an exchange with one of the college’s partner universities or through a Flagler faculty-led program. Past locations have included Russia, Cuba, Vietnam, Italy, Spain, Germany, and New York City (a “study away” program). These programs offer courses with credits that transfer and fulfill degree requirements.

From the day one begins as a Flagler College student, Flagler works to make them a part of the academic community. Their experience is important to Flagler, from the moment they receive their letter of admittance to the day they graduate from college and explore the next chapter of their life.
FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE
Flagler College’s first-year experience pairs students with personal faculty advisors and places students in relationship-building learning communities that introduce them to other first-year, transfer, and international students. New students meet their peers and settle into Flagler through the Building Your Legacy Orientation session, establishing a comfortable foundation before beginning their coursework.
Flagler Freshmen enroll in a Freshman Seminar course that introduces them to liberal education and citizenship. The Seminar introduces a broad, big-picture perspective of topics that promote both worldly knowledge and ethical citizenship. This seminar serves as a bookend to the Capstone experience that students will take in their last semester as seniors.
PASSPORT CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAM
As an incentive to encourage students to cultivate their curiosities outside of the classroom, the Passport Co-Curricular Program requires students to attend a variety of events that exhibit all the great perspectives of a liberal arts education. Typical Passport-credited events include concerts, plays, and debates, all of which support and deepen students’ academics across all disciplines.

LEARNING COMMUNITIES
Learning Communities, intrinsic to the First Year Experience at Flagler, are groups of courses that exemplify the value of a well-rounded, interdisciplinary education. Students choose and take courses that provide different academic perspectives, often taught by professors in different disciplines, around one central topic of interest. The courses fulfill general education requirements and teach students to observe cultural themes and issues with a combination of scientific, artistic, sociological, and political lenses.
CRISP-ELLERT ART MUSEUM
Flagler students and artists from Northeast Florida are able to showcase their art in the college’s renowned Crisp-Ellert Art Museum. It is a space for both reflection and innovation, acting as a venue for art pieces, guest speakers, and discussion and film series. New exhibitions are constantly cycling through the Museum, providing fresh art for guests to experience and many opportunities for students to showcase their work.
STUDENT ACTIVITIES
With dozens of campus clubs to choose from, Flagler students may participate in any combination of student-run clubs, academic organizations, honor societies, and/or special interest groups, exploring their potential for both fun and leadership.
While most clubs have their own specific focuses, the Flagler Campus Activities Board works to liven up the campus as a whole through a variety of annual activities for the entire student body. Popular events include “De-Stress Day,” a day that helps students unwind before finals week with a slew of playgrounds and obstacle courses; “Midnight Breakfast,” which is a free, late-night meal and dance party; and “Man Hunt,” a game of silly-string tag throughout campus.
COMMUNITY SERVICE
Flagler College Volunteers (FCV) is a group of students who work with local organizations and provide meaningful service to the St. Augustine community. It rallies students to aid animal shelters, child welfare centers, and assisted living centers, bringing the Flagler spirit of ethical citizenship to the surrounding city and beyond.
FCV organizes two major projects a year: Alternative Breaks and the Reach Out Raise Up Day of Service. Alternative Breaks are local, regional, national, and international trips that give students the chance to provide community service throughout Spring Break. The Reach Out Raise Up Day of Service is a campus-wide initiative that introduces the entire Flagler community to a wealth of outlets through which they can serve.
