SERVICE
The university’s urban location provides numerous opportunities for volunteer service. Each year, Marquette students perform more than one hundred thousand hours of community service in such programs as Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Habitat for Humanity, and the Senior Citizens’ Prom. Advertising and public relations students help create information campaigns for nonprofit organizations, and accounting students offer volunteer tax-preparation services. The university offers a service learning program in South Africa, in which students take classes and help community-based organizations to give voice to disadvantaged people. Nursing students take part in Marquette’s HIV/AIDS program in Africa.
STUDY ABROAD
Marquette students participate in study-abroad programs on six continents, generally during their sophomore or junior year. For those students with language skills, Spain, France, and Mexico are particularly popular destinations. Ireland and Australia are common study-abroad locations for those seeking an English-language experience.

- Marquette’s Core of Common Studies requires students to choose eleven courses from nine different areas, including rhetoric, individual and social behavior, science and nature, literature and performing arts, and diverse cultures.
- Marquette’s undergraduate business program has received national recognition, and for several years Marquette has been named one of the nation’s notable entrepreneurial universities.
- Using their training in the real world, students from the college of engineering have completed a two-year bridge-building program in Guatemala.
- Marquette offers several innovative interdisciplinary majors and minors, including African-American studies, applied mathematical economics, international affairs, and women’s studies.
- Marquette faculty are known as leaders in research and writing, but also for providing hands-on guidance and advice to their students. The university’s focus on innovation as part of the classroom experience allows students to draw on faculty expertise and participate in lab experiences through the Innovation Campus, Strategic Innovation Fund and the Global Water Center.

Marquette is located on a ninety-acre campus in an urban setting. With unlimited use of public transportation, Marquette students find it easy to enjoy Milwaukee’s cultural, educational, and entertainment opportunities. The Lake Michigan shoreline is just two miles from campus.
RESIDENCE LIFE
As it has expanded through the years, Marquette has absorbed several nearby buildings—a hospital, the downtown Milwaukee YMCA, and several hotels—and converted them into attractive residence halls. About 94 percent of students choose to live on campus or adjacent to it. Themed housing options include floors dedicated to engineering, nursing, leadership, and honors scholarship.
CLUBS AND ORGANIZATIONS
Marquette has more than 300 student organizations offering cultural, athletic, intellectual, spiritual, and social activities of many different kinds. Through the years, Marquette has been a Division I basketball powerhouse. Marquette students have opportunities to attend numerous basketball games.

INTERNSHIPS
Internships with companies and organizations in Milwaukee play a major role in many Marquette students’ educations. Marquette’s Les Aspin Center for Government began as a single student internship, and has since grown into one of the nation’s leading congressional internship programs. Sitting in the shadow of the Capitol Building in Washington, DC, the Aspin Center provides living and classroom space for students interested in government. Students meet and discuss issues with officials from the Pentagon, the Department of State, and the Central Intelligence Agency. Participants have also worked in the White House, the Food and Drug Administration, the Department of Defense, and the Secret Service.
CAREER SERVICES
A Marquette education is designed to prepare students for their professions, and for life beyond their professions. Marquette’s career services department provides students with an extensive database of job listings and search engines, as well as online advice about interviewing, resumes, and networking. These services provide students and alumni with assistance in developing their career paths.
AFTER GRADUATION
While many Marquette graduates stay in the Milwaukee area, working for multinational firms like GE Medical, the Miller Brewing Company, Harley-Davidson, or Northwestern Mutual, a substantial number of students begin their careers in Chicago; New York; Atlanta; Washington, DC; and Minneapolis-St. Paul. About one in three students continues on to graduate school.
ALUMNI
Among Marquette’s many notable alumni are Chicago Sun-Times executive editor John Barron; Tony Award-winning actor Anthony Crivello; comedian Chris Farley; Patrick Eugene Haggerty, founder of Texas Instruments; Rudy Perpich, former governor of Minnesota; and Miami Heat basketball player Dwyane Wade. Many others alumni contribute to their communities through their work in politics, medicine, scientific research, nursing, teaching, law, and literature.

Marquette looks for students who are intellectually curious and seek a complete educational experience. We are also interested in students who have a strong desire to serve others.
Marquette recommends the following coursework for students seeking admission:
