Founded in 1947 by the Order of Saint Augustine, Merrimack College has grown into one of New England’s most dynamic and rapidly expanding colleges. Situated in North Andover, Massachusetts, just 25 miles north of Boston, Merrimack draws students from across the country and around the world into a community guided by the Augustinian values of unity, truth-seeking, and love of neighbor. The college’s mission, “to enlighten minds, engage hearts, and empower lives,” is the organizing principle of everything that happens at Merrimack, from the curriculum to career preparation.

Merrimack’s unique Augustinian heritage takes seriously both rigorous academic formation and the development of the whole person, morally, spiritually, and professionally.

Engaged Students

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
At Merrimack, experiential learning is woven into the academic program. The vast majority of undergraduates participate in at least one form of hands-on experience during their time at the college, whether through internships, co-ops, clinical placements, or practicums. For instance, engineering students have interned with industry leaders like the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, and nursing and health sciences students gain clinical experience embedded in their coursework from the earliest years of their programs. Whatever the field, Merrimack students are expected to practice what they learn alongside studying it.

WARRIORS AT WORK
The Warriors at Work co-op program offers students a full-time, six-month, paid co-op experience at partner organizations, all structured to keep students on track to graduate in four years. Each participant is paired with a dedicated faculty champion who helps align the placement with the student’s academic goals and professional aspirations, as well as a mentor drawn from Merrimack’s alumni network. The program builds toward the co-op experience over the first two years through seminars, site visits, service learning, and professional development retreats, so that students arrive at their placement genuinely prepared.

Great Teaching

FACULTY AS MENTORS
Merrimack’s small class sizes create the conditions for genuine teaching relationships. Faculty are accessible and invested, connecting with their students beyond standard office hours to support their growth. Independent study, faculty-mentored research, and individualized advising are available across all five of the college’s schools.

WRAPAROUND SUPPORT
Merrimack takes seriously its responsibility to support every student who walks through its doors. Tutoring, academic advising, career coaching, and mental health counseling are all available at no additional cost, reflecting the Augustinian conviction that the whole person, not just academic performance, deserves care and investment.

Vibrant Communities

CAMPUS LIFE
Merrimack’s campus has undergone significant transformation over the past decade, with major investments in residential facilities, academic buildings, and student life spaces that reflect the institution’s momentum. A broad slate of clubs, performing arts groups, student media, and campus ministry programs give students of every interest a place to belong. The Augustinian tradition is lived out actively here as well, with campus ministry, service programs, and mission trips providing concrete ways for students to engage their values alongside their academic formation.

SERVICE AND COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Service to others is central to what it means to be a Merrimack Warrior. Each year, more than a thousand students participate in service projects, volunteer programs, and outreach initiatives. The “Mack Gives Back” volunteer days bring the college together around shared service, while SEND trips send students to communities in need domestically and internationally during academic breaks. This culture of engagement flows naturally from the Augustinian conviction that knowledge must be translated into action.

FAITH AND MISSION
The Augustinian tradition is lived out actively at Merrimack, not merely referenced in mission statements. Campus ministry, service programs, and mission trips give students concrete ways to engage their faith and values alongside their academic formation, connecting them to a global community of Augustinian scholars and educators. Students of all faiths are welcomed at Merrimack, yet the welcoming Augustinian tradition creates a true environment of belonging.

Successful Outcomes

CAREER DEVELOPMENT
The O’Brien Center for Career Development connects students with internship placements, co-op opportunities, professional networks, and one-on-one coaching tailored to their goals and fields. The center’s staff works across all five academic schools, ensuring that career support is discipline-specific rather than one-size-fits-all. Merrimack’s proximity to Boston and partnerships with regional employers across technology, healthcare, education, and finance create a robust pipeline of opportunities for students to build professional traction before they graduate.

ACCESSIBLE BY DESIGN
Merrimack has made a deliberate commitment to expanding access and affordability. Guaranteed co-ops, transparent pricing on select degree programs, and substantial scholarship commitments for students entering high-demand fields reflect a college that understands the connection between financial accessibility and genuine student success.
