The College of Saint Benedict (CSB) and Saint John’s University (SJU) offer a nationally recognized liberal arts education rooted in their shared Catholic and Benedictine heritage. While CSB serves women and SJU serves men, the two institutions operate a fully integrated academic program, allowing students to attend coeducational classes taught by a joint faculty across both campuses.

This unique partnership combines the benefits of single-gender residential environments with the richness of a coeducational academic and social experience. Students benefit from a liberal arts curriculum that emphasizes critical thinking, ethical leadership and global engagement, all within a community that values hospitality, respect and holistic development.

Engaged Students

EDUCATION FOR A AN INTERCONNECTED WORLD
The Global Engagement (GL) component of the common curriculum designed to move beyond classroom theory and into real-world intercultural practice. These designated experiences—whether in coursework, off-campus programs or immersive projects—ask students to engage intentionally and reflectively in intercultural contexts. Students build awareness of their own cultural lens, encounter and explore cultures outside the U.S., and develop strategies to adapt effectively in diverse settings.

GL emphasizes a cyclical process of thinking, acting, and reflecting, encouraging students to internalize what they’ve learned and carry that growth forward. Together, these components ensure that our graduates are not only well educated, but also equipped with the global awareness, empathy, and adaptability necessary to thrive—and lead—in a complex, multicultural world.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH
Undergraduate research is a signature strength at CSB and SJU. Supported by the Office of Undergraduate Research and Scholars (OURS), nearly half of the 2024 graduating class engaged in research experiences. Opportunities are embedded in courses and available through funded summer research programs, as well as the OURS grant program, which provides funding for both research production and conference presentations. Students regularly showcase their work at events like Celebrating Scholarship and Creativity Day, gaining valuable experience in both scholarship and public presentation.

Great Teaching

CSB and SJU are nationally respected for their dedicated faculty and commitment to teaching excellence. Professors bring their research and expertise to the classroom while prioritizing mentorship and student growth. Small class sizes foster deep discussion and close faculty relationships, where students are challenged to think critically and reflect deeply.

The liberal arts curriculum is enriched by Catholic and Benedictine traditions, encouraging students to explore big questions, wrestle with ethics, and integrate faith, reason, and service into their academic journey. With more than 70 areas of study, robust study abroad programs, and a commitment to sustainability and community living, CSB+SJU provides students with a comprehensive and enriching college experience that prepares them for meaningful lives and careers.

FIRST-YEAR EXPERIENCE
The First-Year Experience (FYX) at CSB and SJU is intentionally designed to support students through every step of their transition into college, starting before they even set foot on campus and continuing through the end of their first academic year. It’s a deeply integrated, community-wide effort to help students feel a strong sense of belonging, make meaningful connections, and thrive both academically and personally.

FYX’s approach blends academics, campus life, and identity development in tangible, thoughtful ways. The foundational College Success course (INTG 105) is a built-in way that all students can grasp skill-building, goal-setting, and navigating campus resources. Students are also invited to join residential cohorts by participating in First-Year Intentional Living Communities.

The FYX program ensures students don’t just start college; they launch into it with purpose, community, and momentum.
