STUDY ABROAD
There are several different study abroad options available at UT Dallas. Opportunities range from exchange programs to internships. Interested students are invited to check out available programs and submit travel documents to the online portal, Terra Dotta.

Exchange Programs: UT Dallas has several partnerships with international institutions. An exchange occurs when a UT Dallas student studies abroad at a partner university, and a student from that institution comes to study at UT Dallas. Exchange programs offer countless benefits to students. Participants develop cross-cultural communication skills and learn to become independent thinkers in a foreign environment. Some of the exchange programs include:

THIRD PARTY STUDY ABROAD
Sometimes a student’s desires extend beyond the resources available at UT Dallas. If a student identifies a study abroad program not offered through the school, they can find opportunities through third party providers. Interested students should visit the International Center to acquire more information.

INTERNSHIPS, INDEPENDENT STUDY, AND ACADEMIC RESEARCH
On top of study abroad, UT Dallas offers opportunities in international internship, independent study, and academic research. Students interested in pursuing an internship are placed in positions that are directly related to their field of study. Independent study requires students to take control of their abroad experience by pursuing academic work outside of class. All independent study programs must be approved by the department within a student’s major. Finally, students have the chance to conduct academic research abroad. Research is not worth credit, but is funded by UT Dallas.

UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH SCHOLAR AWARDS
The Vice President for Research evaluates undergraduate research and awards students for their original work. All projects are eligible for entry, but every student’s work must be supervised by a faculty member and cover a serious topic within the corresponding area of study. Recipients of this award have the chance to share their work at the Undergraduate Research Poster Contest in the spring. At this event, students have the opportunity to receive additional awards for their work. There are many benefits to undergraduate research:

Students gain experience creating their own work
Interaction with grad students, faculty and other individuals pursuing research
Deep exploration of a topic

Communication: It is vital that every student graduates as an effective communicator—across all platforms. UT Dallas requires all students to take a minimum of 6 credit hours in courses that strengthen oral, aural, written, and visual literacy skills. Courses within this category focus on areas of:

American History: Students are required to take 6 credit hours of American History, with an optional emphasis on the state of Texas. INTERNSHIPS
UT Dallas recognizes co-ops and Curricular Practical Training (CPT) as existing under the umbrella, “Internship.” In all cases, students apply what they have learned in the classroom to real world experience. In order to be eligible, students must be enrolled at UT Dallas and have a declared major. Students must also have completed at least one semester in school and have a GPA of 2.0 or higher. Comet Careers, an online student portal, is a great resource for finding and securing positions. But before a student can become an intern, they must first attend an internship information session, report their position to Comet Careers, and make an appointment with a career consultant.

EXTERNSHIPS
Externships involve job shadowing. When students job shadow, they get a firsthand look at what a career has to offer, as well as the demands of the job. Externships allow participants to gain industry knowledge without a long term commitment. Some of the activities one might experience during an externship include: tours of the facilities, staff meetings, and observation of customer/client interactions. Externships happen over spring break. Interested students should contact a career consultant as early as possible.
