Engaged Students

EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
There’s no better way to prepare for a job after college than to get hands-on experience during college. That’s why Nazareth University ensures that every student completes a minimum amount of experiential learning on campus or in the surrounding Rochester community and abroad. Guided by the principles of reflection, awareness, and integration, students of all majors are able to find a way to see their coursework play out in the real world.

Experiential learning pathways at Naz can take many forms, whether they be through service-learning, internships, research, clinical experiences, or any of the ever-growing opportunities offered. Every student learns how to reflect on their experiences, grow a budding network, and explore their values and curiosities.

Great Teaching

THE UNCOMMON CORE
The Naz Core Curriculum is a multidisciplinary, highly engaging series of courses that inspire students to grow as life-long learners. Branching out from the typical liberal arts core curriculum, Nazareth has designed a core curriculum that is framed around real-world connections and hands-on experiences. The courses in the core curriculum include:

  • Perspectives-Enduring Questions: Practice and refine students’ ability to think critically and communicate clear, strong arguments.
  • Experiential Learning: Give students the chance to see their studies support the community around them, all while building their professional portfolio with truly rewarding experiences.
  • Integrative Studies: Encourage students to explore a passion of their choice through the lens of multiple disciplines. Academic advisors are available to help students craft a course plan that addresses one overarching question.

FIRST- AND SECOND-YEAR EXPERIENCE
Nazareth knows that the transition from high school to college can be both intimidating and challenging, so all students are given the chance to be in community-building programming that sets them up for success. The First-Year Experience (FYE) takes many different approaches to help students find their niche and get engaged in their college education.

Beyond the student orientation at the beginning of the school year, students begin their core curriculum with a first-year seminar that exposes them to the academic standards they will meet in college. With the help of full-time faculty, students join a supportive community as they hone their communication and critical thinking skills.

After the first year, students are still engaged actively with their campus resources to ensure that they make the best of their education. The second-year experience is students’ time to build on the skills they learned in the first year through life-changing leadership and community engagement opportunities. Students can meet one-on-one with Success Coaches to get a better sense of direction, or they can meet with an advisor to learn their options to study internationally. Notably, they may also hone their leadership abilities through a co-curricular leadership certificate and/or a leadership role in one of many organizations on campus.

Countless factions on campus are wholly dedicated to the support of underrepresented students, from the Atlas Diversity Resource Center for LGBTQ+ students and Women and Gender Studies Department to the Center for Spirituality and programming for first-generation and economically disadvantaged students.

Rochester, New York, is a mid-sized, diverse city that is home to a variety of academic institutions, venues for arts and culture, and businesses looking to hire. Successful Outcomes

CENTER FOR LIFE’S WORK
Nazareth University’s Center for Life’s Work partners with students to help them map out the path not just from college to their careers, but also from college to lives of purpose and meaning. With the help of involved career coaches, students can make sense of how their academics, skills, experiences, and passions are able to coexist and lead on a fulfilling journey.

The Center for Life’s Work is more than a career services office; it’s a hub for internship opportunities, community engagement, and professional development and exploration. The ongoing support of their career coaches ensure that students graduate with a sense of direction as they take off into their first post-graduate jobs.

SPARK GRANT
Nazareth University encourages students to get involved in real-world experiences as early and as often as possible. Through the SPARK Grant, first-year students are eligible to receive financial support to cover the costs of study abroad, unpaid internships, or undergraduate research.

“I never expected that only being somewhere for two weeks would have such a profound effect on my life. … All the students we worked with were so enthusiastic and eager to learn as much as possible. … I know I want to do more traveling and humanitarian work in other countries.” – Rebekah Ebersole ‘21, communication sciences and disorders major with a business management minor. She used a SPARK Grant to travel to Ethiopia during winter break to teach in a local school.
