The University of Mount Olive has become one of the most unique and fastest growing universities in North Carolina. The University offers rigorous academic programs, over 60 majors and minors, experienced faculty, small class sizes, and Division II athletics with a winning tradition. Grounded in the liberal arts, the University of Mount Olive helps individuals realize their creative potential while preparing graduates for professional careers.

 

Transformational experiences also occur outside the classroom in student organizations, professional and collegiate clubs, performing groups, internships, and community service opportunities. Students have the opportunity to compete on 20 highly-competitive NCAA Division II intercollegiate athletic teams. The baseball team gained national recognition as the 2008 NCAA Division II Baseball National Champions.

ATHLETICS

The University of Mount Olive is a member of Conference Carolinas and competes on the NCAA Division II level.  Student athletes compete in 20 intercollegiate athletic sports including baseball, softball, and men’s and women’s basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer, tennis, track and field and volleyball.

The Right Start

In the first year experience course, students explore a number of topics to help them adjust to college life and prepare them for successful futures. Students learn skills that assist them in integrating with the campus and community, as well as how to navigate the technology used in courses.

Honors Program

The Honors program gives students with an outstanding high school achievement record the opportunity to learn and be intellectually challenged in a community with other scholars.  Honors students participate in an academic enrichment program of seminars, forums, and projects. Throughout the program, students study the global aspect of classical literature and writing and decide what country they want to visit.  The program culminates in a ten day international trip to the country studied.

Internship and Research Opportunities

Students at the University of Mount Olive are able to gain real-world experience from internships and research projects within their field of study. Internships are required in several majors, providing students the opportunity to apply practical knowledge in their day-to-day experiences. Research projects also provide students an opportunity to work hand-in-hand with faculty members in their field of study as they gain experience that will benefit their future studies and career.

The University of Mount Olive began with a simple yet, meaningful goal: to change the lives of students. Not just to teach them, but to also help every student grow as an individual while preparing them for a lifetime of meaningful and productive work, personal growth, and community leadership. The University of Mount Olive has awarded more than 12,500 degrees since its founding in 1951. Students arrive on campus to learn, listen, struggle and explore the possibilities and opportunities of faith and education. The students are participatory and in search of the insights and concepts for a better tomorrow. In return, faculty and staff provide students the education they need to achieve what they are seeking.   

Faculty

The University of Mount Olive is committed to providing every student with a quality education in a safe and rewarding environment. Faculty serve as experts within their area of study, but also as mentors to students as they prepare for successful careers. Classes are small and taught by professors who want to see each student develop into their personal best. The faculty to student ratio is 15:1, allowing for personal interaction between students and their professor.

A complete college experience involves balancing a dedication to academic study and extracurricular activities. The University of Mount Olive offers many opportunities for involvement and self-discovery.

Campus Environment

The University of Mount Olive’s beautiful 138-acre campus is nestled in the rural community of Mount Olive, North Carolina. Mount Olive is 60 miles southeast of the capital city of Raleigh, and 75 miles northwest of the coastal town of Wilmington.

The University of Mount Olive currently educates nearly 1,000 undergraduates. The male to female ratio is 48:52.

Freshmen are required to live on campus. Students have the opportunity to reside in residence halls and apartment-style housing. All areas on campus are within close walking distance.

Spiritual Life

As a denominational ministry of the Original Free Will Baptists, the University of Mount Olive is committed to educating the student mentally, physically, and spiritually. Weekly chapel services are held, though not required. Several student-led groups are also available to help students grow in their faith and leadership.

Clubs and Organizations

The Campus Activities Board offers fun on-campus activities such as movie nights, socials, and fun games. Off-campus trips have included sporting events, skiing trips, and theatre outings.

A wide variety of student organizations are available providing students the opportunity to get involved and learn leadership skills. Clubs and organizations range from those sponsored by various departments on campus, to student interest organizations, to performance groups.

Preparation for Success

The University of Mount Olive’s holistic approach to education seeks to educate students and prepare them for life beyond the college classroom. Students are asked to adhere to the University’s covenant, calling each person to demonstrate the virtues modeled by Jesus Christ including honesty, trustworthiness, justice, courage, responsibility, gratitude, and respect. Capstone courses allow students to gain first-hand experience through a senior project that can provide the catalyst for further education or career exploration. Many graduates attend graduate schools upon completion of their bachelor’s degree. Graduate schools attended include University of North Carolina, East Carolina University, North Carolina State University, Duke University, Campbell University, Liberty University, Seton Hall, Lincoln Memorial University, and James Madison University to name a few.

Merit-based scholarships are available for students meeting the requirements set forth by the Office of Admissions.  These awards are renewable annually and may require an application process.

  • Leaders Scholarship in the amount of $3,000
  • Merit Scholarship in the amount of $4,000
  • Honors Scholarship in the amount of $6,000

 

Residence scholarships are available for students receiving a Leaders, Merit, or Honors Scholarship in the amount of $1,200 should they decide to live on campus.

Departmental scholarships are also available in some areas including agribusiness, education, music, art, and science.
