STRIVING FOR SOPHOMORE SUCCESS
At many universities, strong advising programs are limited to students in their first and last years when they are charting a path for their college and professional careers, respectively. At Ave Maria, second-year are given the same amount of helpful attention. The university’s Sophomore Success program builds on the first year and helps these developing adults prepare for the next two. Students complete a course on the value of a liberal arts education in the Catholic tradition, build strong written and oral communication skills, complete academic and career assessments, and start to create a career plan. With workshops on résumé building and mentorship between faculty and students, Sophomore Success empowers students to find a fulfilling and fitting career.
Ave Maria students believe in the power of community learning, which is best exemplified by the Faith Households program. In groups of up to 17 students each, those who participate in Faith Households study, live, and pray together throughout their time at Ave Maria. These groups are designed to help students grow academically, spiritually, socially, and morally with the independence to shape their experience however they see fit. They even discover their individual purpose through the creation of their own covenants, agreements on spiritual, academic, personal, and physical standards that the Household will uphold. Faith Households encourage students to find a community and develop their leadership and team-building skills.
THE MOTHER TERESA PROJECT
In the spirit of Mother Teresa, Ave Maria’s unique Mother Teresa Project is dedicated to serving and educating the global community. Students who participate in the project study the life and work of Mother Teresa, all while designing service projects in Florida, across the United States, and even internationally. Groups work together to grow in their faith as they help others understand Mother Teresa’s teachings, meeting once a month to see lectures, go on retreats, and plan outreach for community service.
