Engaged Students

Loyola University New Orleans combines the academic excellence of its faculty and programs, an ideal size that fosters individual student success in a positive learning experience, and the Jesuit commitment to educating the whole person to provide students with a value-centered, liberal arts education. Based on a strong core curriculum, the Loyola experience provides for the intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth of the individual…

  • Loyola offers students many exciting educational and cultural opportunities to travel and study abroad. Recent options have included summer programs in Belgium, England, France, China, India, Ireland, Spain, and Mexico, among others. Loyola’s Center for International Education also coordinates semester programs in a variety of destinations throughout the world. Students receive academic credit for their participation and gain many significant experiences they can apply to their education at Loyola, graduate work, or employment.
  • Loyola offers students various internship opportunities with both local and national companies and organizations. By participating in an internship, students are able to gain relevant career-related experiences that reinforce what they have learned in the classroom and make them more marketable after graduation.
  • At Loyola, there are opportunities for students in many academic disciplines to become involved in research conducted by faculty. Students are also able to conduct their own research with faculty supervision and present their findings at national conferences. Often, students are able to continue their research as they progress to graduate school.
  • Loyola University Community Action Program (LUCAP) directs volunteers in service-oriented activities within the community and the university, while promoting involvement in the area of social justice. Students involved in LUCAP volunteer with organizations focused on environmental action, hunger relief, the death penalty moratorium movement, assisting local elderly citizens, and have taken an active role in rebuilding the New Orleans community. The program aids in promoting social and spiritual growth through involvement in service activities.
  • The Office of Service Learning at Loyola coordinates opportunities for students to combine community service with classroom instruction. The projects focus on critical, reflective thinking, as well as civic and personal responsibility. Students volunteer in many capacities and at many sites, including shelters for battered women, schools, homeless shelters, hospitals, elderly care facilities, literacy centers, programs that serve the needs of the physically and/or mentally challenged, and programs that address the special needs of inner-city youth. Faculty and students collaborate to select a specific site and activities that correlate to the course content. The faculty member grants the students academic credit based on the learning achieved through service, not for completing the hours. Service learning not only benefits the student, but also the greater New Orleans community.
