My Experience Abroad: Developing the Total Self

by Gonzaga University
Written by Danielle Cendejas, Senior

I chose Gonzaga for many reasons. As a native Southern Californian, I really wanted a school where the environment provided four distinct seasons, especially a winter snow. I also looked for a school with a community that was personable and similar to my small all-girls high school. From the President of the University presiding over student masses, to the student bonding occurring in the residence halls and in clubs and organizations, we are all part of the same team.

Gonzaga’s abroad program in Florence was also important to me. I have always dreamed of studying abroad, and when my father and I visited for Gonzaga Experience Live weekend, he told me that I was going to go on the Florence Program if I chose Gonzaga.

I did not object to this plan and on September 15, 2002, I left everything that was familiar in American culture and joined 140 of my classmates for a year that would change our lives forever. I embarked on the journey of a lifetime and through the process, I discovered my total self.

Before I went to Florence, people would tell me that I would not be the same, having seen the moon shine on the other side of the world. I didn’t believe them at first but after having the opportunity to immerse myself into the Italian culture, to live in one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and to travel to over fifteen countries, I can say I am definitely a changed person.

While studying in Florence, I stretched my limits and learned to appreciate life and seize every opportunity that was given to me. While traveling, I hiked to the top of the Island of Capri, spent Christmas in Turkey, and chatted about American Politics with Sicilian men all in Italian. These are experiences that I not only will never forget but have also changed my life. Gonzaga provided me with the opportunity to see the world while studying the Italian language, the culture, and the current events in the international community. In addition to academics, I broadened my perspective on the world and politics as well as allowing me to truly develop my potential to become a global citizen.

The two best decisions I have ever made have been attending Gonzaga and participating in the Gonzaga in Florence program. It was an experience that was invaluable to my academic career and consisted of learning that could not be taught in a classroom because I have been able to truly embody the Jesuit tradition of educating my total self.
